birthday grifts!
May. 22nd, 2019 08:48 pmyeah, you read that right.
i was walking to the store with my mother, just to pick up a couple of things. on the way, we were stopped by an older woman. she proclaimed herself to be 'not weird,' and she was very pleasant, if not a bit of a close talker. she explained to us that her car had broken down, and that while she had been able to get it towed, she was stranded several miles from her home.
to grant the story credence, she flashed her id and told us her name and where she was going. she gave an exact amount of money she would need in order to cover cab fare.
she offered to pay us back, but we declined-- it was a fairly small sum of money. we gave her twenty bucks and she hugged us and bustled off, nearly getting plowed by an SUV as she crossed the street.
once we'd gotten into the store, i stopped for a moment to take a look at something. when i looked up, my mother was staring very solemnly straight into my eyes.
"she showed us her id, but it wasn't a driver's license. she can't drive."
i was, for a little while, inclined to believe her story--she had told us her full name, after all, and showed id even if it did literally say THIS IS NOT A DRIVER'S LICENCE in bold. but perhaps it was just a high-risk, high-reward con. or someone else's id card.
well, whatever it was, it's always nice to be able to help people. and to be quite frank, she looked like she needed the money. so i'm not especially put out.
besides, i've never been grifted before! it's always nice to do a new, exciting thing on one's birthday.
now-- i think i'm going to have some cake.

sinead o'shea!
May. 4th, 2019 05:34 pmhello! i've been thinking a lot about a character i'm going to be playing in an upcoming campaign this summer!
her name is sinead o'shea, and she's a small-time thief at the bottom rung of her guild.
she was entirely beguiled by dashing rogue julian, and clung to his side. he was one of the only people ever to show her affection, and so her devotion to him was unmatched.
one evening, she smiled and wrung her hands and told julian that she was pregnant.
he tousled her hair and kissed her and put her straight to bed.
next morning, her life savings were gone, the guild's treasury had been robbed, and julian was nowhere to be found.
she was despondent. the guild blamed her for letting him close enough to plan the heist, and wouldn't have supported her even if they'd been able to.
in a desperate bid to turn her life around, she begged a local locksmith to take her on as an apprentice. he refused--what reputable businessman would want to take in a scruffy pregnant cutpurse?
there was nothing else for it. the guild had put her out. she was destitute.
she was sick and tired of moping.
sinead resolved to find julian, to take back what he had stolen from her and from the guild. to force him to be accountable for what he'd done.
and that's exactly what she'd do.
i drew a picture of her; images under a cut because they are HUGE

My answer: I always thought that the lyrics to Bruce Springsteen's I'm On Fire went like this:
it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull
But it turns out that they're actually like this:
it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my soul
And that pisses me off really bad, because quite frankly, 'skull' sounds way cooler.
The Staves have a really good cover that you should check out. They say 'skull' in it, I just checked.
mothers' day project!
Apr. 29th, 2019 02:55 pmalright, this is a BIG SECRET, so none of you can go telling my mom, okay?
i have a pothos plant whom i love with every fiber of my soul. i've kept her for years and she just keeps truckin along. i have to repot her every six months or so because she is so big and strong!
i live at university, and i think my mother misses me a lot. i come home for the weekends, but she's always calling me during the week, always planning what we're going to do when we're together. so i want to give her something that she can keep and fuss over that will remind her of me.
so i'm going to take a cutting of my plant, wait for it to root, then plant it and give it to her! i'm planning on decorating the pot that i will give it to her in--does anyone have cool ideas as to how to do that? i was thinking of maybe painting it or knitting a cozy for it. but i only have two weeks!

dark souls!!????
Mar. 16th, 2019 03:07 pmSo my friends have coerced me into trying Dark Souls... mostly because it's Not My Kind Of Game At All and they think it would be funny. (I prefer more character-driven stories and Turn! Based! Combat!)
I spent a few hours working through the first couple of areas last night... and I learned a bunch of things. It's been repeated to me over and over that Dark Souls is 'A Game About Learning,' and that's true, but for me... Dark Souls is also about manipulation.
Namely, cajoling my friend who is MUCH better at these sorts of games than I am to do the hard parts for me, after I try and fail a few times.
I really like the feature where other players can leave notes for you! I like the unified tone that they're written in, and I like the game of trying to figure out whether the person writing them is trolling you or not.
I've been having some trouble with the controls, too... especially since I'm using an XBOX controller for the first time. The A and B buttons are switched!!??? Plus, I keep finding myself trying to use the controls for BOTW or Smash by accident.
Even though Dark Souls really isn't my thing, I had fun with it last night. I think I might try to keep going with it for a while! I spent a while on my character, and I love her and want her to be happy! Her name is Agnes, and she's a gentle country washerwoman who just happened to be tangled up in all of this. She wants to gut through all this scary nonsense as quickly as she can, so that she can get home to her beloved baby niece! Her favorite thing to do on her adventure is to look for flowers.
I knocked up a picture of her really quick.

paying it forward
Mar. 7th, 2019 02:34 ami got a lot of advice on my gender identity from a dear friend in high school. it was very helpful and made the process so much less frightening and lonely.
i've just been given the opportunity to be that Wise Gender Sage for a new friend. its so rewarding to be able to help them with their gender fender benders, to make that long road a little less lonely for them too.

My answer: sat on my fuckin 3ds and broke the hinge... it still works but you can't tilt the screen anymore and it flops all over the place. unfortunate.
Hello! I'm back again with another retrospective post! I've been a very busy little bee this month, and yet it feels like I haven't gotten a thing done! Maybe I'll see some progress if I list it all out.

My answer: I am constantly singing the French chorus from Pink Wine by St. Paul de Vence! I'm sure it's terribly annoying, since I've been doing it for quite some time.
The song is about the singer's own grandfather, who grew up in France during German occupation. The part that I incessantly repeat reads as such:
Vous n'aurez jamais ma chanson
Vous marcherez un long chemin de silence
Mon pays ma donne cette chanson
Toujours je chanterai, vous salauds!
Roughly translated, it means:
You will never take my song
You will march a long path in silence
My country gave me this song
And I will always sing, you bastards!
You should give it a listen--it's a very poignant song, and very atmospheric. Plus, there's a very fun part at the end of the song where you get to shout VOUS SALAUDS at the top of your lungs and hold it for a very long time.

My answer: Was on period. Dropped spoon. Yelled at spoon.
Came to senses, cried about having yelled at spoon.
